Souness endorses Jordan

12 November 2012 22:34

Former Liverpool and Newcastle manager Graeme Souness said Joe Jordan is the right man to take over the Scotland national team.

Jordan, 65, left the Tottenham coaching staff at the end of last season as a result of Harry Redknapp's sacking but the ex-Blackburn boss backs his pedigree and experience to be enough for the job.

Souness said he places Jordan slightly ahead of bookmakers' favourite Gordon Strachan for the position.

"If you ask me, I say Joe Jordan, he's your man," Souness told reporters.

"Joe and Gordon are the standout candidates but I would go for Joe.

"Joe's an obvious candidate. Everyone knows the passion that Joe showed when he was a player.

"He would be perfect. He fits the bill. He's knowledgeable; he has worked at the highest level, played at the highest level and is extremely passionate."

When asked if he was personally interested in the vacant post, Souness - who has been out of work since he was sacked by Newcastle back in 2006 - ruled himself out of the running.

"I'm older, maybe not wiser but I don't want to do it," he said.

Craig Levein was sacked from the role after Scotland picked up just two points from their first four World Cup qualifying games to leave them bottom of Group A.
