Deschamps blasts French attitude

11 November 2012 14:17

France coach Didier Deschamps has pleaded with clubs to be more heavy-handed with players.

The 44-year-old, who took over the role in July, thinks that players in France enjoy too much freedom, and that Ligue 1 clubs should follow the Italian example of Juventus and AC Milan.

Deschamps also lamented the level of negativity surrounding the national team in France.

"Around France there is too much criticism and pessimism. Fewer people identify themselves with the Bleus, but the result in Spain (in World Cup qualifying) can help to change things," the ex-Marseille boss told Tuttosport.

"Many people have told me that it was a long time since they experienced such an emotion. The Euro 206 tournament in France is something very beautiful and important.

"We have to be ready in 2016, but before we must think to qualify for the World Cup as we are in a tough group.

"What is lacking in the French players? Order, respect, rules? All (of) this. In France, players have too
much freedom.

"The clubs must be stronger, as in Italy, the great teams like Juventus and AC Milan have always done that. When I was a player I learned that: those who make mistakes pay."

Deschamps also commented on Juventus rising star Paul Pogba, who has been earmarked for a senior call-up in the future.

"Will Pogba be a new (Andrea) Pirlo or a new (Patrick) Vieira? Pirlo is Pirlo, a comparison is difficult. He is very young, he has his own quality. It's also too soon to compare him to Vieira; physically, he has much to do," he said.

Deschamps takes his squad to Italy for an international friendly in Parma on Wednesday night.
