Adkins upbeat after draw

10 November 2012 21:45

Southampton manager Nigel Adkins remains upbeat despite seeing his side drop more points due to a defensive blunder.

The lowly Saints were on track for a second home win of the season against Swansea through Morgan Schneiderlin's strike, but were eventually pegged back by a Nathan Dyer effort in a 1-1 draw.

The Swansea winger became the third ex-Southampton player to score against the Premier League new boys this term after goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga miscued a pass out from the back.

Despite the draw, Adkins praised the reaction of his players following their early season struggles.

"The reaction of everybody at the football club has been positive," Adkins told Sky Sports.

"Everybody is working very hard and that gave us a good defensive platform to go and pass the ball and create opportunities.

"We've got a very young side. Unfortunately, the decision process for the young goalkeeper has led to the goal but he'll learn from that and we'll take the positives and move on."

The under-fire manager thanked the supporters for their backing.

"We've gone and performed well today, the supporters have again been magnificent and everyone is pulling in the same direction and because of that it gives us a great opportunity," he said.

"We all want to be successful at Southampton and it's magnificent that the supporters have always been great with me. The players have been fantastic and we're all working together.

"We're in the toughest and most desirable league in the world and we intend to stay here and kick on from that."

Swansea boss Michael Laudrup, meanwhile, felt his side lacked cutting edge in the final third but was happy to pick a point on the road.

"To be honest, I think in the first half we passed the ball around really well," Laudrup said.

"But we lacked that five per cent when we arrived in the last third of the pitch. You know, that last pass in between the lines or that one-on-one.

"But I really think we played well; a really good passing game in the first half."
