Premier League: Liverpool 1 Newcastle 1

4 November 2012 19:19

Liverpool came from a goal down to salvage a point in a 1-1 Premier League draw with Newcastle at Anfield on Sunday.

Yohan Cabaye opened the scoring for the visitors with a well-taken strike just before the break but an equally impressive effort from Luis Suarez in the second half earned the Reds a share of the spoils.

Raheem Sterling was the main protagonist in a bright start from Liverpool but the hosts failed to turn their dominance in possession into clear-cut chances.

Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul was first tested with 20 minutes gone, Nuri Sahin playing in Suarez whose low effort forced the Dutchman into a save with his feet.

The Uruguayan went close again 10 minutes later when he headed just over after a diagonal ball from Steven Gerrard.

With 43 minutes elapsed, Cabaye gave the visitors the lead in superb fashion. Ben Arfa beat former Newcastle defender Jose Enrique with a lovely piece of skill before clipping a cross to the Frenchman, who controlled well then slammed a half-volley past Brad Jones.

Mirroring the first half, the Reds were on top, Suarez forcing Krul into a diving save with a curling effort, the forward then turning provider as he slotted in Sahin whose shot deflected wide.

Brendan Rodgers' men showed no signs of halting their dominance in possession but struggled to find a way through the opposing defence.

But a moment of magic from Suarez finally drew the Reds level. Enrique sent a long, hopeful ball up field with Suarez lurking by Fabricio Coloccini's side, the 25-year-old outpacing his man before bringing the ball down with his shoulder, rounding Krul and slotting home into the empty net.

More persistence and determination saw Suarez break free of Coloccini on the right-flank, before somehow getting the ball across to Jonjo Shelvey. The substitute had the goal at his mercy but failed to connect properly.

With around five minutes left Coloccini saw red for a very late challenge on Suarez, the defender sending his studs into his opponent's leg well after he had shifted the ball on.

The Reds tried to take advantage of the extra man, Shelvey wasting two good chances to win it late on and a deflected Suarez free-kick just bouncing over, but Newcastle held on for a hard-fought point.
