Scottish League Cup wrap: Inverness send Rangers packing

Rangers' hopes of a long run in the Scottish League Cup were ended on Wednesday when they were thumped 3-0 by Inverness in the quarter-finals.

The 54-time Scottish champions, who have been plying their trade in the country's fourth tier after entering administration earlier this year, were no match for their Premier League opponents, with the crowd of 28,033 at Ibrox unable to inspire their heroes.

Andrew Shinnie silenced the home supporters after 27 minutes, and Inverness were well on their way to victory when Gary Warren struck just before the hour mark.

Shinnie's younger brother Graeme wrapped up the win from the penalty spot in the 79th minute, sending Inverness into the semi-finals and Ally McCoist's side tumbling out.

Wednesday's other quarter-final saw Hearts progress at the expense of Dundee United on penalties after scores were locked at 1-1 following extra time.

Callum Paterson gave Hearts the lead in the 21st minute, but Johnny Russell levelled for United 10 minutes before the break, much to the delight of the Tannadice faithful.

With neither side able to break the deadlock in extra time, it was United's Sean Dillon who proved the villain in the shootout, firing wide in sudden death to send Hearts into the final four.
