Sporting Kansas City ended their four-match winless run with a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes in Major League Soccer on Sunday.

CJ Sapong and Kei Kamara netted first-half goals for Peter Vermes' side, and they held on despite a 72nd-minute Simon Dawkins strike.

Kansas City, who started the season with six straight wins, remain third in the Eastern Conference, while the Earthquakes are second in the west.

Sporting took a fifth-minute lead at home as Sapong got on the end of a fine team move, finishing off a pinpoint cross from Kamara.

Kamara, who was a constant threat down the right, made it 2-0 in the 39th minute, heading in a cross from substitute Michael Harrington.

Dawkins pulled a goal back for the Earthquakes when he curled an effort into the top corner from just outside the area, giving his side some chance of salvaging a point.

San Jose pushed for an equaliser, but Kansas City held on for their first win since April 14.
