Mehmedi hails Swiss triumph

27 May 2012 05:25

Admir Mehmedi says Switzerland's desire to end a 56-year winless run against Germany helped fire them to a surprise 5-3 victory on Saturday.

Switzerland pulled off one of the surprise international results of the year to dent Germany's preparations for Euro 2012.

Ottmar Hitzfeld's side failed to qualify for the UEFA showcase in Poland and Ukraine, but Mehmedi was overjoyed with his goal and Switzerland's upset victory.

"We knew that before the match (that Switzerland had not beaten Germany in 56 years)," he said.

"That's why we were so motivated going into this game."

"The goal is a beautiful experience for me. For our young team the win is a step in the right direction."

Up next for Switzerland is a friendly against Romania on Wednesday, another team who failed to qualify for the European Championships.
