Klose, Hummels digest Swiss shock

27 May 2012 02:03

Veteran Germany striker Miroslav Klose blamed a lack of effort for his team's surprise 5-3 friendly defeat to Switzerland on Saturday.

An Eren Derdiyok hat-trick, together with goals from Stephan Lichtsteiner and Admir Mehmedi, handed Germany an unlikely blow as one of the pre-tournament favourites began their preparations for Euro 2012.

Lazio forward Klose said his team-mates were eager to impress in the run-out at St Jakob-Park, Basel, but did not do enough to come out on top.

"Well, of course we fancied a different outcome today," Klose said.

"Everybody knows that we trained hard, often two times a day. I mean today the weather was good and we were optimistic. But if you want to win you have to do work for it. And, well, we did not."

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels refused to panic after the defeat, despite conceding five times to an unfancied Swiss team.

"For me it is not that dramatic because there was a reason for every goal we conceded," he said.

"And also in terms of attacking play, we did not play well.

"We know that we have made mistakes and we have to work on that. If you let in five goals obviously something went wrong at the back.

"But the problem is not in our quality, we just made individual mistakes. Nobody put in a performance to deserve a permanent place in the starting line-up - no one."

Germany are in friendly action again on Thursday when they play Israel, before beginning their European Championship assault with a match against Group B opponents Portugal on June 9.
