Rummenigge: Chelsea loss worse than ´99

20 May 2012 14:51

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says Bayern Munich's Champions League defeat to Chelsea feels worse than their dramatic loss to Manchester United.

Bayern drew 1-1 with Chelsea at their own Allianz Arena on Saturday, before going down to the English Premier League team in a penalty shootout.

The Bundesliga club suffered an agonising defeat in the final of the competition at Camp Nou in 1999, when they surrendered their lead to lose 2-1 to United in the final moments of the match.

Few would have imagined Bayern could suffer a more painful fate, but Rummenigge believes the defeat at home to Chelsea was arguably worse.

"I went through it all in 1999, when we lost so dramatically in Barcelona to goals in the 89th and 92nd minutes," Rummenigge said.

"That was unbelievably brutal, but I almost have the impression this evening is somehow even more bitter, brutal and basically also unnecessary. The pain is unbelievable.

"It's been one of those evenings when you ask yourself: wouldn't it have been better to stay at home and not have to go through this? You ask yourself how this result could ever come about."

Bayern are back in action when they take on the Netherlands national team in a friendly at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.
