Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink calls it quits

15 May 2012 23:51

Former PSV and Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink announced on Tuesday that he will retire from football following a 16-year career.

Vennegoor of Hesselink started out at local club Twente, coming through the youth ranks and joining the senior squad in 1996.

After some impressive displays in the Eredivisie, PSV swooped to sign him, by then one of the most promising players in Dutch football.

In his five seasons with PSV, the Dutchman netted 85 goals, won three league titles, and was frequently linked with a transfer to a major European club.

He eventually moved to Glasgow with Celtic, where he spent three seasons, scored 44 times and lifting the SPL trophy twice in a row.

After leaving the Bhoys at the end of 2008-2009, Vennegoor of Hesselink played for Hull and Rapid Vienna, but failed to make an impact for either team.

He returned to PSV in November 2011, but has announced his retirement after his contract expired at the end of the current season.

The striker was part of the Netherlands' squads for the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008, and scored three times in 17 appearances for his country.
