Redknapp delighted with fourth

14 May 2012 02:58

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp spoke of his joy after the club equalled their best-ever English Premier League finish of fourth.

Goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe gave Tottenham a 2-0 win at home to Fulham on Sunday, sealing fourth spot.

Redknapp said he had no regrets about letting a significant lead over rivals Arsenal slip, but pointed to the difficult task he faced at the beginning of the campaign and suggested fans should be happy.

"We finished fourth – I couldn't be more pleased with what the players have done here this year," he said.

"If people start getting carried away with what Tottenham should be doing then they want a reality check."

Two years ago, Spurs' fourth-place finish meant Champions League qualification but with Chelsea in the final of Europe's premier club competition, attention turns to Munich on Saturday.

If Chelsea beat Bayern Munich, Tottenham will play in the Europa League next season, and Redknapp said he would cast aside family loyalty and support the Bundesliga side at Allianz Arena.

"Of course it's difficult but it's no more than (nephew) Frank (Lampard) would if he was involved with Chelsea," he said.

"We're professional – he knows I want Tottenham to play in the Champions League next year. I want to beat Chelsea whether Frank plays or not.

"When I was manager of West Ham, we played Liverpool when (son) Jamie (Redknapp) was playing for them but I still wanted West Ham to win.

"My allegiances are with Tottenham only. I want to see us in the Champions League next year."

Fulham manager Martin Jol rued his team's poor start after Adebayor netted inside two minutes at White Hart Lane.

"If you concede a goal after 90 seconds it is always difficult, you make it difficult for yourselves," Jol said.

"We know that if you come to a place like White Hart Lane you have to play with flair and not be intimidated.

"In the first half an hour they were better, stronger and sharper and had everything to play for.

"We created a few chances and then they scored again after a bad clearance and that is exactly what you shouldn't do."
