La Liga wrap: Real finish in style, Villarreal relegated

14 May 2012 09:19

Champions Real Madrid wrapped up their La Liga campaign in style by beating Mallorca 4-1 and surpassing Barcelona's points record in a league season.

Jose Mourinho opted to field a strong starting line-up, and it was not long before his side got themselves ahead with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema sending Real into a commanding half-time lead.

Two Mesut Oezil strikes either side of a Gonzalo Castro effort wrapped up a solid victory and saw the 100-point mark reached for the Madrid giants.

Real broke the deadlock on 19 minutes through Ronaldo, the Portuguese international heading home before Benzema made it 2-0 four minutes later.

Gonzalo Higuain teed up Oezil four minutes into the second half for Real's third but Castro found a reply for Mallorca when he fired past Iker Casillas at the near post.

Real restored their three-goal advantage just before the hour mark courtesy of Oezil's second goal.

The defeat meant Mallorca missed out on a Europa League spot after finishing in eighth place.

Elsewhere, a solitary goal from Venezuelan striker Rondon was enough for Malaga to overcome relegated Sporting Gijon and secure the final Champions League birth.

Falcao's last-gasp goal broke the hearts of Villarreal fans and sent Miguel Lotina's side down to the Segunda Division.

Villarreal's shock relegation was confirmed after Real Zaragoza defeated Getafe 2-0 at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Already relegated Racing Santander concluded their turbulent campaign with a disappointing 4-2 loss at home to seventh-placed Osasuna.

Abdelkader Ghezzal struck twice to help Levante to a 3-0 win over 10th-placed Athletic Bilbao and claim the final Europa League slot.

In other matches, Raul Tamudo found the back of net deep into injury-time to help Rayo Vallecano prevail 1-0 against Granada while Espanyol and Sevilla played out a 1-1 draw.
