Montolivo to join Milan as Van Bommel departs
AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed the arrival of Riccardo Montolivo ahead of the 2012-13 campaign.
The Fiorentina midfielder is out of contract this summer and after months of speculation, the Italy international is now set to make a move to San Siro on a free transfer.
"Next season we will have (Ricardo) Montolivo who is a very good player, very technical. Milan must remain competitive next season, we must continue the work we started last year," Allegri said ahead of his team's final game of the season against Novara on Sunday.
But while Montolivo comes in, Dutch veteran Mark van Bommel will leave Milan to return to former club PSV.
The Netherlands international, who joined the Serie A giants from Bayern Munich in January 2011 on an original six-month deal, will sign a one-year contract with the Eindhoven side.
Milan missed out on claiming consecutive Scudetto titles last week with Juventus winning the Serie A title.
"It's been a failure," a blunt Allegri said of the current campaign.
"The team has done all it could do but there were unexpected errors. The crossroads of the season? The (second) game against Juventus. We missed a lot of players in that game and maybe if we won, things would have been different."
Sunday's fixture will be an emotional one for many involved with the club as it will represent the final chance to see Alessandro Nesta, Gennaro Gattuso, Pippo Inzaghi and Van Bommel in the red-and-black shirts of Milan, while Clarence Seedorf is also expected to leave the team this summer.
"It's an important day because there are players leaving who have made history for Milan, who have won a lot. They are real men who gave me a big hand when I arrived. They leave AC Milan as players who made a great team but in life, we must look ahead. Tomorrow there will be great sadness in saluting these great champions," Allegri said.
Van Bommel has opted to rejoin the side he made his name at, previously representing PSV between 1999 and 2005.
In a successful career now spanning 20 years, Van Bommel has also represented Fortuna Sittard and Barcelona.
