Riquelme thrilled with Libertadores goal

10 May 2012 18:29

Boca Juniors idol Juan Roman Riquelme was delighted with his performance to help the club book their place in the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals.

The former Villarreal and Barcelona playmaker was on top form in Santiago, Chile, leading his club to a 3-2 victory over Union Espanola in Wednesday's second-leg of their round-of-16 clash.

Riquelme set up goals for Juan Insaurralde and Pablo Mouche, and scored himself as the club sealed a 5-4 aggregate victory.

He dedicated his performance and the triumph to his young son after the match, explaining that things unfolded exactly how Riquelme junior had predicted.

"My little boy told me that I was going to score a goal. Now we can enjoy it, I hope that Agustin is enjoying this moment too," the emotional star told reporters.

"It was a great game. We scored three times away from home, which is not easy. We are happy because we qualified, we won well and our first goal hit them hard.

"Of course everything is tough for us, everyone wants to beat us and we have to defend our club and our football the best way possible."

Riquelme also marked a personal achievement, drawing level with former team-mate Martin Palermo as Boca's top scorer in the Libertadores.

The Argentines will face the winner of the tie between Fluminense and Internacional in the next round.
