Matthaus tips DFB Pokal classic

10 May 2012 19:46

Lothar Matthaus believes Saturday's DFB-Pokal final between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich has all the makings of a classic.

The Bavarians go into the clash having lost four consecutive matches against their opponents and have also suffered the indignity of surrendering two championships in a row to the Bundesliga winners from Dortmund.

Matthaus, however, insists that record will count for nothing in a match in which he expects both teams to throw caution to the wind.

"I expect a gripping final. Having their poor record against Dortmund on their mind will only push Bayern to give their all in arresting that slide," Matthaus wrote in his column for Kicker.

"The recently poor head-to-head form of Bayern against Dortmund does not signify a shift in the balance of power so many are suggesting. Despite Dortmund already sporting a mature side, Bayern have proven they can beat any team in the world if they want to.

"In being able to call on slightly better individuals, Bayern Munich have the advantage."

Bayern Munich have the chance to record a cup double this season, with their Champions League final ticket already booked against Chelsea on May 19 at the Allianz Arena.
