Copa Libertadores wrap: Vasco, Boca into final eight

Vasco da Gama scraped through to the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals on Wednesday, while Boca Juniors also advanced.

Taking a 2-1 lead into the second leg against Lanus in Argentina, Vasco da Gama looked to have sealed the tie when Nilton netted on 19 minutes.

But Lanus fought back in the final half-hour against the Brazilians, with Mariano Pavone and Teofilo Gutierrez getting on the scoresheet to set up a penalty shootout.

Vasco da Gama responded in the shootout, winning 5-4 to progress to the last eight, where they will face Corinthians.

Lanus were made to pay for Silvio Romero's penalty miss in the shootout, with Vasco da Gama netting all five of their shots.

Boca Juniors booked their place in the quarter-finals with a thrilling 3-2 second-leg victory at Union Espanola.

The Argentine Primera Division leaders completed a 5-3 aggregate win with their strong performance in Chile.

Juan Manuel Insaurralde and Pablo Mouche struck for Boca, before Jean Paul Pineda pulled a goal back for Union Espanola.

Juan Roman Riquelme netted in the 68th minute to end any chance of a Union Espanola comeback, although the hosts did net again through Sebastian Jaime.

Corinthians qualified for the last eight after goals from Fabio Santos, Paulinho and Alex gave them a 3-0 win at home to Ecuadorian outfit Emelec.

The Brazilians played out a 0-0 draw away from home, and sealed a convincing win in the second leg.
