Real Betis announce China trip

9 May 2012 04:42

Real Betis are the latest La Liga club to attempt to build links with China after announcing a tour of the Asian nation this off-season.

The Spanish club announced they will stay in China from July 8-22 and play two games in Nanning and Shenzhen as it tries to grow its name in Asia.

Betis will compete in the Nanning tournament, where they will face Premier League outfit Fulham, and will also take on Chinese second-tier club Shenzhen Ruby, currently coached by Philippe Trousier, in a friendly.

The announcement, which will see Betis tour Asia for the first time, follows Villarreal who will have a pre-season camp in China for the third time in mid-year, while Valencia also renewed their shirt sponsorship with Chinese company Jinko Solar this week.

Betis president Miguel Guillen said the announcement was more than a friendly game, and was important for the club from both an economic and marketing perspective.

"This is a very important step forward for us, not just from an economic point of view, but also from a question of marketing and communication and in getting our name known in Asia," Guillen told the club's website.

"We've been welcomed with open arms by a country with 1.4 billion people. Our project in Asia is medium to long term and Betis is opening up to Asia with a sporting, economic and educational project.

"This is much more than going to play a friendly game. Both the governor and the organiser have received Real Betis with maximum honour."
