Ligue 1 Wrap: PSG take top spot

7 May 2012 04:12

Paris Saint-Germain have outgunned Valenciennes 4-3 in a thrilling match to lead Ligue 1, although rivals Montpellier have a game in hand.

PSG came from two goals behind to lead 4-2 with over half an hour remaining in the match before Valenciennes hit back in the 80th minute to ensure a tense end to the game.

In a horrible start to the match for the capital club, Valenciennes scored twice in the opening 11 minutes through Vincent Aboubakar and Remi Gomis.

But PSG hit back soon after when Nene was set up by Jeremy Menez and they were in front by half-time.

Maxwell's goal from a tight angle in the 40th minute was followed up by an injury-time strike from Blaise Matuidi put PSG up 3-2 at the break.

Menez added a fourth for Carlo Ancelotti's side in the 58th minute but Valenciennes denied PSG a comfortable finish to the game thanks to Renaud Cohade's goal with 10 minutes to go.

But PSG held on and now sit top of Ligue 1 with 73 points, ahead of Montpellier only on goals scored.

Montpellier can move back into the lead with either a draw or a win away to Rennes on Monday.

Lyon opened the door for Rennes and Saint-Etienne to move closer in their fight for a Europa League spot with a draw against visiting Brest.

Yoann Gourcuff gave the home side the lead in the 37th minute but Brest grabbed a share of the points with a 75th-minute goal from Gregory Lorenzi.

The result leaves Lyon on 60 points, with Rennes (57 points) and Saint-Etienne (56 points) to play on Monday.

The draw also moves Brest out of the relegation zone, although they will return if Auxerre, Dijon or Sochaux win on Monday.

In Sunday's other game, Evian defeated Ajaccio 2-1.

Benjamin Andre put the visiting Ajaccio side in front in the 14th minute but Evian hit back straight away through Cedric Barbosa.

Danish youth international Daniel Wass scored the winning goal win for Evian nine minutes after half-time.
