Ligue 1 wrap: PSG held by Bordeaux, Auxerre suffer

25 March 2012 23:38

Montpellier remain top of Ligue 1 after Paris Saint-Germain could only draw 1-1 with Bordeaux on Sunday, while Toulouse and Dijon both won.

Visitors Bordeaux were marginally more impressive during a dull first half at the Parc de Princes, with Benoit Tremoulinas offering their chief threat.

It was a burst from the Tremoulinas that brought their best opportunity of the first period, the left-sided player getting to the by-line before cutting a pass back for Jaroslav Plasil, whose effort was well saved by Salvatore Sirigu.

At the other end, Bordeaux goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso was under-employed.

Indeed, PSG failed to muster a good effort on target for the duration of the first 45 minutes.

A Nene free-kick found the head of Alex, but the defender was unable to steer his effort on target.

For a brief period at the beginning of the second half, PSG looked slicker and more incisive.

Mohamed Sissoko worked Carrasso with a shot from the edge of the penalty box, while a stinging Nene free-kick was caught at the second attempt by the visitors' goalkeeper.

Guillaume Hoarau should have done better when left unmarked, heading over the goal after good work from Christophe Jallet down the right flank.

With 20 minutes remaining, the home side were given a real wake-up call when Mamadou Sakho made an error that resulted in Plasil smacking the bar with a wonderful curling effort.

A scramble ensued, and the hosts only just avoided conceding.

Soon afterwards, they did fall behind.

Ludovic Obraniak's pass split the PSG defence, allowing Nicolas Maurice-Belay to square for Cheick Diabate to tap into an empty net.

PSG replied swiftly, with substitute Mathieu Bodmer brilliantly releasing Hoarau with a terrific back-heel, and the striker duly blasted home.

Diabate drew an outstanding save from Sirigu with a turn and shot from close range, but there was to be no winner in this dramatic encounter, leaving PSG second in Ligue 1, behind leaders Montpellier on goal difference.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Koro Issa Kone and Younousse Sankhare both scored as Dijon defeated Caen 2-0 at home.

And Franck Tabanou's first-half effort was enough for Toulouse to see off the visit of bottom side Auxerre 1-0.
