Thiago loving ´unique´ Messi

21 March 2012 18:21

Barcelona midfielder Thiago has heaped praise on team-mate Lionel Messi after the Argentine broke the club's goalscoring record.

Messi, 24, netted a hat-trick in Barcelona's 5-3 win over Granada in La Liga on Tuesday, taking his tally to 234 goals and breaking Cesar Rodriguez's 57-year record.

Brazilian Thiago hailed Messi's quality, describing the forward as 'unique'.

"He means everything to us. Some people say 'I saw Pele playing' or 'I saw (Diego) Maradona play'. I can say I saw Leo Messi play," Thiago said.

"He is a different player, he is a player who has gone down in history already, a player who writes history and will make history in football. There are few adjectives to describe him. Unique."

Messi debuted for Barcelona in October 2004, and has scored his 234 goals in a remarkable 314 games.

Thiago said what Messi had achieved at such a young age could not be matched, and added a World Cup title was not out of the question.

"What he has done at the age of 24 is unbeatable. It's indescribable. I think he still has a lot left to give," Thiago said.

"He will be able to do a lot with his national team. I think he needs more backup in his country, but it depends on every person, every country, even every region."

"I think everyone will do their bit and I think the national team will help Leo to get that missing title."

Barcelona's win over Granada helped them close the gap to La Liga leaders Real Madrid to five points, with Jose Mourinho's men visiting Villarreal on Wednesday.

Thiago urged his team to maintain hope the league title was still within reach, even if their fate was no longer in their own hands.

"Excitement is the last thing. We're determined and playing with an aim to win it. We want it but we have to concentrate on each match. It's difficult," he said.

"It is 10 matches in which we score and do well in. It's out of our hands, but we have to keep faith."
