Struggling Gamba fear Adelaide

20 March 2012 08:13

Gamba Osaka coach Jose Carlos Serrao admits Tuesday's AFC Champions League clash in Adelaide United is 'very important'.

The Brazilian was appointed as the new Gamba boss after long-time coach Akira Nishino departed in the off-season.

Serrao has started poorly at Gamba, with two J.League defeats along with an opening 3-0 ACL home defeat to Pohang Steelers, which has left him under pressure.

Speaking to reporters, he said: "This game is very important for us because we started with a defeat at home which was a very bad start, so we need to get back the three points even though it is an away game."

"We didn't play well in the first AFC Champions League game and deserved to lose, but in the J.League we played better and the results were unfair."

Gamba's latest loss was a 2-1 defeat in the Osaka derby to Cerezo on Saturday but he believes they can bounce back despite the long trip to Australia.

"We have had enough time to rest and we have had good preparations for what we expect to be a tough game," he said.

Meanwhile, Adelaide, who lost the 2008 ACL final to Gamba, are cautious about the Japanese outfit despite their poor recent form.

Caretaker coach Luciano Trani told reporters: "We are aware of how consistent Gamba have been over the last six years, not only in this competition but their domestic competition."

"They have a very established line-up, although I know they have had a few changes this season and obviously lost the last three games, but they are a team who have got talented individuals."
