La Liga wrap: Cazorla equaliser stuns Real

18 March 2012 23:53

A brilliant late equaliser from Santi Cazorla has stunned La Liga leaders Real Madrid and secured a 1-1 draw for visiting Malaga on Sunday.

The home side looked set for their 12th-straight victory in La Liga until Cazorla struck a stunning free-kick in second-half injury time.

Karim Benzema gave Madrid the lead after 35 minutes when he headed Cristiano Ronaldo's cross into the net.

Malaga only managed five shots to Madrid's 18 for the match but goalkeeper Wilfredo Caballero kept the visitors in the game with five saves before Cazorla's late equaliser.

Roberto Soldado scored a hat-trick as Valencia clinically defeated Athletic Bilbao 3-0.

Valencia's victory was their second in a row away from home, a good response from the third-placed club in Spain after they were winless on the road between December and February.

Valencia has now moved six points clear of Levante on the La Liga table, while Bilbao missed the chance to move above Osasuna and into a Europa League spot.

In a first half of few chances, it looked as if the score was going to remain goalless at the break, but out of nothing, Soldado pounced on Mikel San Jose's back pass, rounded Bilbao's goalkeeper and scored to put his side ahead in the 41st minute.

In the 57th minute Jordi Alba fought his way into the box and set up Soldado for his second, after a period of pressure by the home side.

San Jose's match got even worse with five minutes to go when he handled the ball in the penalty area and Soldado stepped up to the spot and slotted the ball into the top corner.

Atletico Madrid are also in with a chance of playing Europa League next season but failed to draw closer to Osasuna, going down 2-1 in Mallorca.

The home side took the lead through an own goal from Diego Godin two minutes after the break and doubled the advantage soon after when Michael Pereira scored.

Atletico Madrid probably should have drawn the match but Falcao missed a penalty in the 54th minute, before pulling a goal back 12 minutes later and Mallorca held on for the win.

Levante also won on Sunday to remain in fourth, thanks to Xavi Torres' goal in second-half stoppage time.

Levante beat Villarreal 1-0 after Ruben Suarez's late free-kick rebounded off the post straight to Torres for an easy tap in.
