Premier League preview: Wigan v West Brom

15 March 2012 08:09

Wigan will be desperate to break a home winless streak that has extended to 12 games when they host West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Roberto Martinez's men occupy bottom spot on the English Premier League table, and despite only losing once in their past five, Wigan will be hoping their DW Stadium surrounds will be able to get them over the line for all three points at home for the first time since August.

Conversely, West Brom were unbeaten in their past three trips away from the Hawthorns (two wins, one draw), before their defeat away to new Premier League leaders Manchester United last start.

Roy Hodgson's side earned back-to-back clean sheets prior to their loss to United - the first time the club had done so in league action since February 2010, when they kept out Plymouth Argyle and Scunthorpe in consecutive matches.

Their improvement in the back four was necessary after conceding 71 goals last season - the second-worst defensive record behind Blackpool.

West Brom's steadied defence comes as bad news for Martinez, who has seen his side score just once in their past four home fixtures.

More worrying for Wigan is that they are not hampered by an extensive injury list, with just goalkeeper Mike Pollitt and midfielder David Jones unavailable due to ailment.

West Brom will be without tough defender Jonas Olsson, after the centre-back earned a red card - his first in the Premier League - in their loss to United.

Former Ireland international defender Steven Reid is out for the season, while midfielder Billy Jones is nearing a return to fitness and could be included in the matchday squad.
