Gomez pleased with Bayern revival

14 March 2012 11:36

Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez says his team have regained their confidence after a 7-0 thrashing of Basel on Tuesday.

The Bavarian giants thumped the Swiss outfit to take a 7-1 aggregate win and progress to the Champions League quarter-finals.

Jupp Heynckes' men have slipped five points adrift of Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund after struggling following the mid-season break, but Gomez believes they are nearing their best form.

"All of our players have got their self-confidence back. Everything seems to be working better once again," Gomez said after the win over Basel.

"We support each other just the way as we should do. Obviously all this is a lot easier when you have a great run of results like we have done, with last weekend and the Basel match in mind."

"It has been a step in the right direction. But still, we are five points behind the top of the league, and there is a long way to go."

It was the second time in four days Bayern had scored seven times, having hammered Hoffenheim 7-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Gomez netted four times against Basel, while Arjen Robben scored a brace and Thomas Mueller the other in the resounding win.

Bayern captain Philipp Lahm hailed his team's quality in the win, and said it was vital they took their chances in the first half.

"We came roaring out of the traps at the beginning of the first half and got an early goal. After that we were able to calm down a bit, and we were able to control the game in the final third of the pitch, without conceding the ball very often," he said.

"That's when we really started to show our quality - something that we saw both at the weekend and tonight, and what was crucial of course was that we made it 3-0 by half time."

Meanwhile, Bayern president Uli Hoeness criticised the media for their coverage of Bayern' season.

"I am not a fan of what you (the media) are doing. Two weeks ago they (the players) were Bratwursts," Hoeness said.

"And now they're supposed to be superstars. I don't want to live in such an environment."
