Relief overwhelmed Gomez

16 June 2012 19:07

Mario Gomez said he was relieved while celebrating his goals for Germany in their 2-1 Euro 2012 win over Group C rivals Netherlands.

The Bayern Munich ace was on the receiving end of criticism from former German midfielder Mehmet Scholl, who accused the forward of not working hard enough, despite scoring the winning goal against Portugal in the opening round of fixtures.

However, he proved the 41-year-old wrong by netting twice to down the Dutch on Wednesday, but was muted in his joy after burying both goals - something Gomez openly states was brought on him, but is now keen to put the issue to bed on Sunday.

"If you stand on the pitch, you can feel the pressure within only the first few minutes in the game," Gomez said at a press conference.

"I felt like I was being watched, that's what wasn't nice about the whole thing. I've looked at the replay of the match again, and I would have celebrated it more.

"It was fun to have scored, but perhaps it was more a feeling of relief. It was not as easy as it looked.

"Of course I want to celebrate more against Denmark. It's not about Gomez and it's much less about Scholl. It's just about Germany."

Germany conclude their group-stage campaign of Euro 2012 with a final match against Denmark on Sunday.
