Blaszczykowski joy after game-saving goal

13 June 2012 02:55

Poland captain Jakub Blaszczykowski hailed his side's resolve in their 1-1 Group A draw against Russia on Tuesday evening.

The Euro 2012 co-hosts suffered a setback early on at the National Stadium in Warsaw when Alan Dzagoev struck his third goal in the tournament eight minutes before half-time.

With Francizek Smuda's men facing the threat of elimination after the Czech Republic's 2-1 win over Greece earlier in the day, the Borussia Dortmund midfielder stepped up to strike one of the goals of the tournament so far, beating Vyacheslav Malafeev with a curling effort to earn Poland a point.

The 26-year-old was delighted with his side's response in the capital, and paid tribute to his coach for the tactics deployed.

"When you score an equaliser like that, it gives really good energy to the team. Smuda got his tactics spot on, and we followed them through on the pitch," Blaszczykowski told UEFA.com.

"We're still in contention, and if we win our final game (against the Czech Republic) we're through. We'll fight until the end.

"We've proved we can play a good game and achieve good results. The supporters can make a difference and we must believe in ourselves.

"If we have the attitude and get energy from the fans we can show them that we deserve their support."

Poland face Michal Bilek's men in their final group game on Saturday in a winner-takes-all affair.
