Pilar, Kadlec optimistic despite drubbing

9 June 2012 03:23

Vaclav Pilar said the Czech Republic were not prepared enough going into their 4-1 Euro 2012 loss to Russia on Friday.

The Russians raced into a 2-0 half-time lead through Alan Dzagoev and Roman Shirokov before winger Pilar's strike early in the second half looked to have given his side a chance.

However, a second from Dzagoev and a fine finish from substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko ensured a comfortable victory for Dick Advocaat's men.

And Pilar said the defeat was a result of his side underestimating their opponents and not preparing properly.

"We made many mistakes," Pillar told reporters.

"As if we weren't prepared well enough. We wanted to get back into the game but as soon as we lost our breath they scored two more. They hit us.

"We have played the way they wanted, we gave it to them and sadly we played their game. We knew they were a very good team but they turned out even better.

"We hoped that we can still get the result at half-time but it seems that all the effort was for nothing.

"It will be tough to show that we are still good, especially after getting result like this. But we believe.

Meanwhile, Michal Kadlec has insisted that all is not over, despite the heavy defeat.

While the 27-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defender accepted that his side made mistakes, Kadlec claims the Czechs have what it takes to bounce back and still top the group.

"There are still two games left and with the first one (of the tournament, Poland v Greece) ending in a 1-1 draw. I can see us winning the rest of our group games and progressing to the quarter-finals." Kadlec told reporters.

"We will definitely analyse the game tomorrow and everything is possible, if we learn from our mistakes. We must change few things on Tuesday in order to win a game.

"We have lost the ball a lot and it's hard to restore the shape of the midfield with the class of players they had. We have made it hard for ourselves, first goal, then the second, but we can only hope that the second game is different."

The Czech Republic play Greece on Tuesday.
