Knee injury ends defender´s tournament

9 June 2012 01:09

Greece defender Avraam Papadopoulos will play no further part in Euro 2012 after suffering a knee ligament injury.

Papadopoulos, 27, appeared to be struggling early in the 1-1 draw with Poland in Warsaw, before being replaced in the 37th minute by namesake Kyriakos Papadopoulos.

Scans have diagnosed the injury as a torn ligament in his knee, with the Hellenic Football Federation announcing that the Olympiacos defender is to undergo surgery.

Papadopoulous will return to Athens later on Saturday.

The news comes as a major blow for coach Fernando Santos, with the 34-times capped defender missing the duration of the tournament.

His replacement, Kyriakos, only made his ninth appearance for the national team after coming on as a first-half substitute.

Greece will also be without fellow defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos who was sent off in the first half.
