Papadopoulos believes in Greek miracle

1 June 2012 16:39

Kyriakos Papadopoulos is in no doubt that Greece are capable of upsetting the odds at Euro 2012.

The Schalke defender was watching on TV as his country shocked the football world by being crowned European Champions in Portugal eight years ago.

Few are tipping the Greeks to win the title this summer, but Papadopoulous has great faith in Fernando Santos' side, who have been drawn in the same group as Poland, Russia and Czech Republic.

"I am confident for the team and I want us to do the best we can," the 20-year-old centre-back said.

"And why can we not go all the way to the final?"

Papadopoulos scored the only goal of the game as Greece completed their preparations for Euro 2012 with an uninspiring win over Armenia on Thursday.

"We played well in the first half, when I scored the goal," he said.

"It doesn't matter that I scored, but the fact that the team won.

"In the second half we were put under pressure, but we should not forget though that we are still in a pre-Euro mode.

"We will work on our weaknesses in the following days ahead of the first game."

Meanwhile, coach Santos conceded that his troops had allowed their level to drop in the second period but concurred with Papadopoulos' assessment that valuable lessons had been learned.

"We were good in the first half and especially in the first half hour of the game," Santos said.

"We were organised and moved the ball well.

"We failed to score some easy goals, though and we weren't as good in the second half.

"There was a time the team looked as if it have been cut in the middle. However, we gained some very useful conclusions regarding our weaknesses."
