Brazil Serie A wrap: Mineiro edge clear

Atletico Mineiro moved two points clear atop Brazil's Serie A following a 2-0 win over Santos on Thursday, as Bahia managed a rare win.

Atletico had dropped to second following Vasco da Gama's victory over Botafogo on Wednesday, but they regained the lead in the championship standings courtesy of a comfortable home win.

Danilinho opened the scoring for the hosts with two minutes remaining until half-time at Estadio Raimundo Sampaio, thanks to an assist from Marcos Rocha.

And Rever bagged the second with 25 minutes remaining to seal all three points.

Atletico's victory meant Santos' nightmare start to the season continues, with the traditional heavyweights down in 18th place, having managed just one win from 12 attempts.

Also on Thursday, Bahia enjoyed a 2-0 win away to powerhouse Palmeiras.

A second-half brace from Souza, the first from the penalty spot, was enough for the visitors to emerge victorious from their visit to the Arena Barueri.

Palmeiras have fared only slightly better than fellow big guns Santos, winning two of 12 matches and losing six.

They sit 16th, outside the relegation zone on goal difference only and a point behind Bahia.

Finally, Flamengo are winless in three after being held to a 0-0 draw at home to Portuguesa, who remained in the bottom four.
