Pre-season friendlies wrap: West Ham, West Brom lose

18 July 2012 04:33

Premier League sides West Ham and West Brom lost pre-season games on Tuesday, while Manchester City drew 0-0.

West Ham travelled to Kassam Stadium to tackle League Two side Oxford United, but came back to London on the receiving end of a 1-0 loss.

Veterans Kevin Nolan, Mark Noble and Ricardo Vaz Te featured for West Ham as manager Sam Allardyce selected a young side with a mixture of experience, but Deane Smalley's strike in the 36th minute was enough for Oxford United to register the upset victory.

West Brom also suffered a 1-0 away defeat, losing to Blue Square North side Worcester City.

Reserve team coach David Oldfield took charge of a youthful West Brom side, as Mike Symmons strike nine minutes shy of half-time led Worcester City home.

In Germany, Manchester City fielded a strong side, but failed to take advantage in a goalless draw with Dynamo Dresden.

Vincent Kompany, Kolo and Yaya Touré, Aleksandar Kolarov, Pablo Zabaleta, Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez all featured for the Premier League champions, but Roberto Mancini's side struggled to impose themselves on the German second-tier outfit.

The match may prove costly for Manchester City too, with Kompany limping off the pitch shortly after the hour mark with a hamstring complaint.

Fellow top-flight side Reading were one Premier League outfit to register a victory on Tuesday as they travelled to Ebbsfleet United and picked up a 3-2 win.

The Royals took the lead just after 15 minutes when Jake Taylor rose highest in the Fleet penalty area, heading a corner past Preston Edwards in the hosts’ goal.

However, Fleet did manage to muster an equaliser before half-time as Ben Greenhalgh drove the ball into the box and Moses Ashikodi squirmed through the Reading defenders to reach the ball first and slot past the goalkeeper.

Soon after the break Fleet found themselves behind again as first Jordan Obita fired in on 53 minutes, before Brett Williams found the net moments later with a simple finish.

Reading’s two-goal lead did not last very long, though, as Tom Phipp finished with aplomb from 30 yards out just three minutes later, but Brian McDermott's men were able to hold on for the win.

Meanwhile, Italian side Roma continued their impressive start to the pre-season with a 2-1 victory in Austria against Rapid Vienna.

Miralem Pjanic gave Roma the lead in the 10th minute, but US striker Terence Boyd scored with a superb bicycle kick to level the scores some 15 minutes later.

Roma, who were fielding an experienced side in their second pre-season match, upped the ante as the second half commenced and David Pizarro netted the decisive goal eight minutes after the restart to register the victory.
