MLS wrap: Earthquakes rumble as stars shine

15 July 2012 16:47

San Jose have thumped Real Salt Lake in their MLS Western Conference showdown, while David Beckham and Robbie Keane starred for LA Galaxy.

The Earthquakes and Real entered Saturday's clash at Buck Shaw Stadium in California occupying the top two spots on the Western Conference table, but it was leaders San Jose who stamped their authority on the standings by powering to a 5-0 victory.

Chris Wondolowski scored a hat-trick for the Earthquakes, with Alan Gordon and Simon Dawkins grabbing the others, while Real's cause was not helped when Kyle Beckerman was sent off just before the hour mark after a melee.

The win gave San Jose a four-point buffer over Real Salt Lake on top of the Western Conference table.

In Portland, two goals apiece from Beckham and Keane kept the defending champion Galaxy's season on course, giving them a 5-3 victory over the Timbers.

Former Rangers hit man Kris Boyd put the home side ahead just three minutes into the contest, but two terrific goals in the space of five minutes from Beckham put the visitors in control at the 25-minute mark.

A Landon Donovan penalty made it 3-1 soon after and when Keane opened his account moments later, it was 4-1 after just 28 minutes.

Kosuke Kimura pulled one back for the home side, but Keane's second on 64 minutes made sure of the three points and meant Boyd's second goal, after 70 minutes, was no more than a consolation.

In the East, Sporting Kansas City moved three points clear of DC United at the top when goals from Jacob Peterson and Teal Bunbury lifted them to a 2-0 win over Columbus Crew, while bottom side Toronto enjoyed a rare win - 1-0 over New England Revolution on the road.

Chicago Fire had a 10th-minute goal from Pavel Pardo to thank for their 1-0 triumph over Vancouver Whitecaps, while the Western Conference's bottom side Dallas put a dent in the Colorado Rapids' play-off hopes with a 2-1 win away from home.

The Rapids took the lead six minutes after the break through Omar Cummings, but Carlos Rodriguez equalised for the visitors before Fabian Castillo secured the three points in the 81st minute.

And a 91st-minute goal from Carlos Valdes saw the Philadelphia Union take a 2-1 home win over the Montreal Impact.
