Spurs complete deal for Vertonghen

12 July 2012 13:19

Tottenham have officially announced the signing defender Jan Vertonghen from Ajax on a long-term contract.

The Belgium international has been linked with a move to White Hart Lane for several months but the move reportedly hit a snag over the defender's demands for a cut of the transfer fee, believed to be in the region of 10 million euros.

The 25-year-old made 31 appearances as Ajax captain last season, scoring eight goals from the back as the Amsterdam club clinched the Eredivisie title.

Vertonghen is Andre Villas-Boas' second signing since his appointment at the north London club, following the capture of Gylfi Sigurdsson from Hoffenheim.

A short statement from the club released on Thursday read: "We are delighted to announce that Jan Vertonghen has completed his transfer from Ajax after successfully passing his medical."
