Rangers five denied clearances

9 July 2012 20:49

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has refused to grant clearance for the transfers of five former Rangers players.

Steven Naismith, Steven Whittaker, Steven Davis, Kyle Lafferty and Jamie Ness have all secured deals to join new clubs following Charles Green's takeover and relaunch of Rangers under a new holding company.

But, with the Ibrox giants seeking compensation should any of the players formalise moves, the SFA is yet to authorise the transfers - though FIFA is expected to grant temporary registrations before a meeting on the issue.

Four of the five players have made the move south of the border to Premier League clubs, with Davis joining Southampton, while Whittaker and Naismith have penned deals at Norwich City and Everton respectively.

Ness has also moved to England with Stoke City but Lafferty has gone further afield than his former colleagues to sign for Swiss club FC Sion.

Football clubs must request international transfer clearance through their own national association, in Rangers' case the SFA.

However, the club's recent liquidation has complicated the process, with the newco club having not yet registered as a member of the SFA.

Eleven players in total have refused to join the new Rangers after Yorkshire-born business Green bought the assets of the Ibrox club.

Green has contested their right to leave as free agents, though, and has issued a written warning to English clubs claiming that the players are in breach of contract.
