Richards looks for Olympic gold

3 July 2012 03:25

Micah Richards said being called up to the Team GB football squad was an honour and is targeting gold at the Olympics.

Richards missed out on a place in Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 squad but has secured call-up as one of three over-23 picks for the Olympics alongside Craig Bellamy and Ryan Giggs.

The 24-year-old says he is already looking forward to the competition and linking up with his former manager Stuart Pearce, who gave him his professional debut.

He told Manchester City's official website: "I'm delighted to have been included and honoured to have the chance to represent Team GB at the London Olympics.

"When I got the call from Stuart Pearce, who gave me my debut at Manchester City and has been a massive support throughout my career, I was over the moon. Hopefully we can win gold for the country."

Team GB will begin their Olympic campaign on July 26 at Old Trafford against Senegal before games against United Arab Emirates and Uruguay.
