Lille squeezed past Compiegne and Bordeaux survived a scare in the Coupe de France on Saturday, while Ajaccio and Auxerre suffered upsets.
Cup holders and reigning Ligue 1 champions Lille needed an extra-time winner from Gianni Bruno to get past fourth-tier team Compiegne in the round of 32.
Bruno struck with seven minutes left in extra-time, rescuing his team from the lottery of a penalty shootout at the Stade Paul Cosyns.
Bordeaux did not avoid the drama of penalty kicks, but will breathe a sigh of relief after beating third division Creteil 2-1 in a shootout.
The Ligue 1 side led at the Stade Dominique Duvauchelle, through a goal from Michael Ciani.
Marcel Essombe levelled for Creteil with 12 minutes remaining to force extra-time.
And while Henri Saivet struck to restore the visitors' lead just a minute into the additional 30, Essombe was on hand to equalise a second time.
But Creteil proved unable to complete what would have been a famous upset victory from the penalty spot.
Auxerre were less fortunate than their top-flight colleagues, as they went down 2-1 at home to Ligue 2 club Chateauroux.
Maxime Bourgeois netted a two-minute brace for the visitors to the Stade Abbe-Deschamps, and while Dariusz Dudka did get a goal back for Auxerre on 76 minutes, they were unable to level in the time remaining.
In the biggest upset of the day, fourth-tier Bourg-Peronnas claimed the scalp of Ligue 1 strugglers Ajaccio with a 3-2 win.
The hosts, leading 2-1 thanks to a double from Soulimane Ben Chaib, looked to have done enough to win the match in regulation at the Stade Marcel-Verchere.
Ajaccio forced extra-time when Mehdi Sbaa levelled with seconds remaining in the 90, but Julio Tavares' 105th-minute strike sealed the shock victory for Bourg-Peronnas.
In Saturday's only all-Ligue 1 match, Stade Rennes defeated Nice 5-4 in a penalty shootout, following a 0-0 draw at the Stade Municipal du Ray.
Elsewhere, Evian won 2-0 away to Valance, and Dijon saw off Istres 2-1 at home, as Ligue 1's promoted teams both progressed.
Joris Colinet's 46th-minute goal was enough for US Quevilly to beat Angers 1-0.
A late Ted Bolongo brace earned Jeanne d'Arc a 2-0 win away to Limoges.
And finally, Benoit Darcy netted the winning goal as Orleans downed Niort 2-1 on the road.
