Buriram celebrate Thai league-cup double
Buriram PEA completed the league and cup double with a 1-0 win over Muangthong United in the Thai FA Cup on Wednesday.
The newly-crowned Thai Premier League champions netted the winner in extra time through 18-year-old Ghanaian striker Frank Acheampong.
Buriram were the better side during match and seemed destined to win but an inspired performance by Muangthong goalkeeper Kawin Thammasatchanan denied them.
The first half opened at a slow tempo but livened up as the half progressed. The best chance for Muangthong came from Thai international Teerasil Dangda on 25 minutes, but his shot went wide.
A few minutes later, Frank Ohandza's shot struck the post for Buriram.
Shortly after the break, Buriram became more aggressive but Thammasatchanan again showed his class to deny them on several occasions.
Muangthong occasionally threatened Buriram's defence through Datsakorn Thonglao and Dangda but there were no goals in normal time.
Acheampong's winner came three minutes into the second half of extra time, following fine play by Bouba Abbo.
The defeat means Muangthong United miss out on qualifying for the 2012 Asian Champions League qualifiers, with league runners-up Chonburi taking the second Thai spot.
Meanwhile Buriram still have a chance to win a rare treble against Thai Port FC in the League Cup final on February 4.
