Copa Libertadores wrap: The Strongest upset Santos

16 February 2012 03:59

Bolivian club The Strongest came from behind to beat Brazilian champions Santos 2-1 in their Group 1 Copa Libertadores opener on Wednesday.

Substitute Rodrigo Ramalho scored in stoppage time to seal the victory in the high altitude of La Paz.

Defending champions Santos opened the scoring on 10 minutes when Henrique finished near the penalty spot after a free kick taken by Ganso fell for him.

Paraguay's Ernesto Cristaldo then netted the equaliser for The Strongest in the 33rd minute before Ramalho's strike got their campaign off to the perfect start with the winner.

No Brazilian side managed to pick up three points on Wednesday as both Flamengo and Corinthians were held to 1-1 draws away from home.

Defender Leo Moura opened the scoring for Flamengo in their Group 2 opener with Argentinean side Lanus.

But they were forced to settle for a draw with Cesar Carranza equalising for Lanus in the 75th minute.

Corinthians rescued a point from their Group 6 clash with Venezuelan side Deportivo Tachira as midfielder Ralf nodded home four minutes into stoppage time.

Sergio Herrera had put the home side ahead in the first half and they were denied a second by a controversial off-side decision in the 63rd minute that ruled out their goal.
