Adkins hails ´quality´ Lambert

Southampton manager Nigel Adkins was pleased after his side drew 1-1 with Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday.

Adkins' side sit just one point above the relegation zone in the English Premier League but they were rewarded for a battling display at Fulham as they claimed a draw thanks to Rickie Lambert's late penalty.

Lambert struck from the spot with five minutes remaining, cancelling out Dimitar Berbatov's early strike.

"He's quality," Adkins said of Lambert, who has scored seven Premier League goals this season.

"He's a great forward player for us. He doesn't miss from the penalty spot. He takes a good penalty. (Fulham goalkeeper) Mark Schwarzer got two hands to it, but the pace of the penalty meant he couldn't keep it out.

"We should have had six penalties this season and we didn't, so it's about time we got one. I'm just pleased the referee gave it because, over the course of the season, maybe we didn't get some decisions.

"The players have shown a good resolve. To leave an away game with something is important. It is about picking up results.

"There's a togetherness, a growing experience and the players are in there and working very hard for each other and growing in maturity all the time."

Fulham's failure to win saw them slip to 14th on the table and Martin Jol's side are now just six points above the relegation zone.

Only two sides have conceded more goals than Fulham this season and Jol was furious after the result.

"I am like a thunderstorm, I am very angry. Sometimes with myself and sometimes you can do something about it," Jol said.

"Today I thought if we played in the way we could play, we could make it difficult for them.

"We could have scored again as we had a couple of chances, but it is not enough. You will never hear me say it was enough to earn three points today because it wasn't."
