Thwaite, Jamieson eager to aid Perth cause

13 December 2012 06:46

Michael Thwaite and Scott Jamieson have Perth Glory to end their five-game winless streak at the expense of Newcastle on Friday night.

The Socceroos duo rejoined full training for the first time on Thursday after playing their part in helping Holger Osieck's side win through the East Asian Cup qualifying tournament in Hong Kong to secure a place in next year's finals.

And they are confident that they will soon be replicating that success at a domestic level, with the A-League match against the Jets at nib Stadium their first opportunity.

"It's a pretty big game," said Jamieson.

"If we can get a win and follow it with two or three more, we'll be right back in the mix.

"They (Newcastle) are struggling, we've had a bit of an indifferent patch, so it's a bit juicier than normal and hopefully we can get the result.

"We're creating the chances, now it's about taking them."

"Defensively we've been quite well structured," added Thwaite.

"Maybe it's time to be a bit ruthless up top, express ourselves a bit better and show that desperation to score a goal.

"I watched our games against Heart and Victory on the internet when we were over in Hong Kong and obviously I wasn't real happy with the outcomes, but I don't feel we deserved to lose either of those games.

"Both teams created chances and unfortunately we copped a goal in each game and hopefully we can shut that up quick smart and start scoring at the other end."

Finding the net has certainly become a major concern for Glory, who have scored just twice in their last five games, prompting coach Ian Ferguson to vow to mix up his attacking options this week.

And Jamieson feels whoever gets the nod up front will be well capable of opening up the Jets defence.

"I think we've got the goalscorers here," he said.

"If you look at Billy (Mehmet), Smeltzy (Shane Smeltz) and Doddsy (Travis Dodd), they've all proven in the past that they're goalscorers.

"Sometimes you go through a patch where you don't score and I think collectively as a team we can try and help them.

"I'm not worried, I know it'll come and hopefully when it rains, it pours."
