Heynckes calls for video technology

11 December 2012 22:34

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has called for video evidence to be introduced after a poor decision cost Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

Dortmund defender Marcel Schmelzer was shown a red card by referee Wolfgang Stark for a deliberate handball on the goal-line, though replays showed that the ball had actually hit his leg as Juergen Klopp's team lost further ground in the title race with a 3-2 defeat to Wolfsburg.

And Heynckes believes that decisions like those at Westfalenstadion could be removed from the game if referees were given more help from technology.

"For years now I keep saying the fourth official should sit in front of a monitor and tell the referee if it is no handball and no red card - like in Dortmund," he told Kicker.

UEFA president Michel Platini has said that bringing in goal-line technology would be too expensive, but Heynckes does not understand why football authorities are opposed to the change.

He added: "It takes two or 10 seconds. I do not understand why there is such a lack of flexibility. They always say: It's not possible. Of course it is.

"If a coach freaks out on the sideline, it is being communicated to the referee right away."
