Ligue 1 wrap: Marseille triumph at Brest

2 December 2012 23:16

Marseille ended Brest's unbeaten home run in Ligue 1 on Sunday with a 2-1 win inspired by Joey Barton.

The English midfielder provided both assists for Elie Baup's side, who move up to second spot behind Lyon.

Brest who were undefeated in six home games this season, were on the back foot after some good play from the Ayew brothers, Andre and Jordan, and a Barton free kick on 28 minutes.

The former Manchester City midfielder teed up Souleymane Diawara for the opener on 35 minutes with the Senegalese defender smashing home.

Dutch striker Charlison Benschop drew level with one of Brest's rare forays forward shortly before half-time but in truth the 1-1 scoreline was very harsh on Marseille.

Barton continued to threaten in the second half with an early strike parried away by Alexis Thebaux's outstretched boot before he laid off his second assist for Andre Ayew to nonchalantly slide home.

Baups' side then locked the game down with only a Benoit Lesoimier long-range effort troubling Steve Mandanda in the Marseille goal.

Marseille are two points behind leaders Lyon who humbled them 4-1 last weekend.

Rennes defeated Troyes for the second time in four days with a pulsating comeback at the Stade de l'Aube.

After their midweek 2-1 in the Coupe de la Ligue, Rennes scored another late winner to clinch a 3-2 victory.

Strikes from Benjamin Nivet and Stephane Darbion put Troyes 2-0 up before the in-form Romain Alessandrini, who scored the midweek winner, made it 2-1.

Julien Feret equalised with eight minutes to play for the visitors and after setting up the equaliser, Jonathan Pitroipa calmly slotted home the winner.

Lorient handed eighth-placed Toulouse a fifth defeat in six games with Benjamin Corgnet's strike on the stroke of half-time all that separated the sides.
