Ligue 1 preview: Lille, PSG bid to rein in Marseille

31 August 2012 06:29

Lille's more mature mindset in defence could be the difference when they host Paris Saint-Germain in a match neither can afford to lose.

While this week's round is just the fourth of the Ligue 1 season, Marseille have already built a substantial lead over Lille and PSG, meaning the latter two clubs' clash on Sunday takes on extra significance.

If Lille lose they could finish the round seven points behind the league leaders, while for PSG, defeat could see the margin to the top of the table become nine, if Marseille defeat Rennes.

Mickael Landreau looms as a key man for Lille after the 33-year-old goalkeeper was recalled to the French national squad on Wednesday.

Landreau was also important as Lille advanced to the Champions League group stage via a playoff with Copenhagen and he was given plenty of praise by his head coach Rudi Garcia, who was thrilled with his side's defensive performance.

"I thought we handled the match in a mature manner," Garcia said.

"It was a positive evening; it proved that we have learnt from last season's Champions League experience.

"We played a good Copenhagen side but I knew if we played to our best we would win.

"We defended well and in Landreau we have a top-level goalkeeper."

If Landreau can put in another good performance against PSG, Lille should be confident of continuing the big-spending capital club's poor start to the season, which has seen them draw three straight matches.

Marseille will hope to continue their perfect start to the season against Rennes having won all three games so far, while fourth-placed Bordeaux should be too strong for Nice in Sunday's other match.

Lyon are set to host Valenciennes on Saturday in a battle of second versus third.

Reigning champions Montpellier, who are languishing in the relegation zone with just one point from three games, should register their first win of the season when they travel to bottom club Sochaux.

In other Ligue 1 matches on Saturday, Toulouse will host Reims, Lorient are up against Nancy, Troyes travel to Brest, Ajaccio take on Evian and Bastia clash with Saint-Etienne.
