Copa Sudamericana wrap: Goianiense through on penalties

Atletico Goianiense advanced to the knockout stage of the Copa Sudamericana, while Colon and Deportivo Quito were also winners on Thursday.

Brazilian side Goianiense progressed after accounting for local rivals Figueirense 4-2 in a penalty shootout.

The teams were locked at 2-2 on aggregate after the second leg at Figueirense's Estadio Orlando Scarpelli ended in a 1-1 draw following extra time.

Figueirense midfielder Tulio opened the scoring in the 37th minute before defender Gustavo equalised for the visitors on 59 minutes.

Both sides were unable to find a decisive goal in extra time, forcing the second-round contest into a shootout.

Atletico defender Marcos missed the opening penalty, but the teams were soon on level pegging as veteran midfielder Rodrigo failed to convert his spot kick for Figueirense.

Figueirense defender Joao Paulo then missed his attempt from the spot, paving the way for forward Patric to strike the winning penalty and send Atletico through to the round of 16.

Colon made an ideal start to their second-round tie with a 3-1 win at home to fellow Argentinean side Racing Club.

Young forward Lucas Mugni gave Colon the advantage in the 47th minute before Racing striker Gabriel Hauche levelled the scores three minutes later.

But there were further goals to come in Santa Fe as Colon's Facundo Curuchet scored on 59 minutes and Gabriel Graciani put the result beyond doubt after beating Racing goalkeeper Jorge De Olivera in the 89th minute.

Racing host Colon in the return leg in Buenos Aires on August 30.

Meanwhile, Ecuadorian side Deportivo Quito reached the second round after defeating Leon de Huanuco 3-2 in Peru to secure a 4-2 win on aggregate.

Deportivo Quito meet Bolivian outfit Aurora in the first leg of their second round tie on August 30.
