Copa Sudamericana wrap: Independiente win thriller

23 August 2012 05:34

Boca Juniors and Independiente played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in the Copa Sudamericana second round on Wednesday.

Independiente won the tie on the away-goals rule after the first leg ended 0-0.

Boca were gifted the lead on 16 minutes with a mistake at the back from Independiente defender Leonel Galeano allowing Santiago Silva to guide the ball past Hilario Navarro.

The visitors got back on level terms a minute before the break, as a superb cross in from Patricio Vidal was turned home by Independiente's Jonathan Santana but within a minute, Boca's lead was restored through Leandro Somoza with a stunning strike from distance.

After the break, Independiente drew level once again, Paulo Rosales reacting fastest to chip over the keeper on 49 minutes.

Despite Rolando Schiavi's dismissal for a second bookable offence, Boca again took the lead with 13 minutes to play through Juan Sanchez Mino.

However, Independiente clawed their way back for a third time with Ernest Farias slotting home from the penalty spot three minutes into stoppage time.

Coritiba held off Gremio for a 3-2 win in their second leg but bowed out 3-3 on aggregate on the away goals rule.

Ex-Manchester City midfielder Elano levelled scores at 1-1 for Gremio from the penalty spot before Roberto and Pereira hit back for Coritiba.

Marcelo Moreno scored a minute into stoppage time for Gremio to turn the tie in the visiting side's favour.

In Wednesday's other fixture, Botafogo defeated Palmeiras 3-1 with goals from Dutch veteran Clarence Seedorf, Renato and Nicolas Lodeiro but were knocked out of the competition, also 3-3 on aggregate.

Patrik Camilo was on target for Palmeiras in the first half to make it 1-1 after Seedorf's strike and his goal proved decisive after the visitors won the first leg 2-0.
