Liga Sagres wrap: Porto, Sporting Lisbon make slow starts

20 August 2012 00:54

Portuguese champions Porto began their Liga Sagres campaign in underwhelming fashion on Sunday, held to a 0-0 draw at Gil Vicente.

Neither side was able to break the deadlock at the Estadio Cidade de Barcelos, meaning Vitor Pereira's side - who won the title by six points from Benfica last term - kicked off their season with a draw.

Gil Vicente goalkeeper Adriano Facchini was the hero for the home side, pulling off a string of quality saves to dent the champions.

Stalemates were the order of the day in Portugal on Sunday, with Nacional and Vitoria Setubal playing out a 2-2 draw.

A Claudemir penalty on 70 minutes put Nacional ahead, and they looked assured of the three points when Isael doubled their advantage four minutes later.

But Vitoria Setubal responded in kind, with a penalty from Albert Meyong trimming the gap before an 85th-minute goal from Cristiano secured them a share of the spoils.

Elsewhere, Pacos de Ferreira and Moreirense drew 1-1, with Moreirense's Fabio Espinho netting 10 minutes from the end to cancel out Andre Leao's first-half opener for Pacos de Ferreira.

And Sporting Lisbon, who finished fourth last term, began their season with a 0-0 draw at Vitoria Guimaraes.
