International friendly wrap: Malta extend winning streak

15 August 2012 04:34

Malta have won three straight international matches for the first time since 2000, with a 3-2 victory over San Marino in Serravalle.

The hosts at Stadio Olimpico di Serravalle were hoping to end their losing streak - which has now stretched to 46 matches - and they began well, as Manuel Marani opened the scoring on seven minutes.

But the Maltese quickly ended any San Marino dreams of a breaking the drought, which dates back to April 2004, courtesy of quick goals to Michael Mifsud and Andrei Agius to have the visitors ahead after 22 minutes.

They maintained their lead until deep into the second half, at which point they sealed the contest when Mifsud wrapped up a brace, before Danilo Rinaldi added a penalty to San Marino's tally - scarce consolation to their dire losing streak.

In the day's other friendly, Liechtenstein ended a four-match losing run with a 1-0 win over Andorra in Vaduz.

David Hasler scored the winner at Rheinpark Stadion, to extend Andorra's winless streak to 53 matches.
