Eredivisie wrap: PSV fall in season opener

12 August 2012 01:01

Rodney Sneijder scored twice for RKC Waalwijk as they stunned PSV Eindhoven 3-2 in the first round of the new Eredivisie season.

PSV striker Jeremain Lens gave the visitors the lead after seven minutes on Saturday when he capitalised on a defensive error by Waalwijk to slot the ball home.

But Waalwijk hit back four minutes later when Robert Braber's cross was deflected into the net by PSV defender Wilfred Bouma for an own goal.

Sneijder, who is the younger brother of Inter Milan star Wesley, put RKC in front when he pounced on a loose ball in the box to score in the 40th minute.

Waalwijk moved further ahead eight minutes after the break when Sneijder released Teddy Chevalier down the right and then burst into the penalty area to receive a return pass and thump the ball into the net.

A looping header from Tim Matavz in the 72nd minute gave Eindhoven some hope of a comeback and a red card to RKC defender Guy Ramos with six minutes to go made the home fans even more nervous.

But Waalwijk, who finished ninth last season, six spots behind PSV, held on to win and move to the top of the Eredivisie table.

In Kerkrade, visiting Zwolle led for 51 minutes through a goal from Joost Broerse.

But Roda JC ensured they did not lose their opening home game of the season thanks to a 58th-minute equaliser from Sanharib Malki.

Roda played the last 28 minutes with 10 men after Dutch midfielder Mitchell Donald was sent off but Zwolle could not capitalise and the game ended in a draw.

In the other Eredivisie match on Saturday, Heracles were held to a 1-1 draw at home by VVV Venlo.
