Copa Sudamericana wrap: Barcos brace boosts Palmeiras

2 August 2012 14:02

Hernan Barcos scored twice as Palmeiras defeated Botafogo in Copa Sudamericana action on Wednesday, while Sao Paulo also won.

The visiting Botafogo side took it up to their opponents right from the opening whistle, but the brilliance of Barcos in front of goal proved the difference as Palmeiras opened up a two-goal cushion ahead of the second leg later this month.

The veteran Argentinean striker opened the scoring a minute after half-time and then completed his brace on 65 minutes with a well-taken strike.

Palmeiras had just five shots on goal all match in comparison to Botafogo's nine, but it mattered little as Barcos ensured the home side won.

Meanwhile, Sao Paulo scored a goal in either half to pick up a 2-0 victory away at Bahia.

It was veteran goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni that gave Sao Paulo the lead in the seventh minute with one of his trademark free kicks, before Ademilson sealed the result midway through the second half.

In other matches on Wednesday, Deportivo Quito edged out Leon de Huanuco 1-0 courtesy of an own goal by Roller Cambindo, while Goianiense and Figueirense FC played out a 1-1 draw.
