O´Brien is Vancouver bound

1 August 2012 18:25

MLS outfit Vancouver Whitecaps have announced the signing of defender Andy O'Brien from Leeds United.

O'Brien, 33, was transfer listed by Leeds manager Neil Warnock in May after making just four Championship appearances last season.

The experienced centre-back has enjoyed stints at Newcastle United, Portsmouth and Bolton and was delighted to have inked a deal with his new club.

"I'm very grateful for the opportunity given to me by Vancouver Whitecaps FC," O'Brien told the club's official website.

"I appreciate the hard work that's been put in by Vancouver, given the short period of time there was to get this deal done. I've had the opportunity to look around the city, which is fantastic, and I'm really looking forward to contributing on and off the pitch."

O'Brien was reportedly a high earner at Leeds and the Yorkshire club will be pleased to have him off their books, but the signing represents good value for a Vancouver side that sits fourth in the Western Conference of the MLS.

O'Brien has represented the Republic of Ireland 26 times and travelled the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan.
